While the majority of athletes will be trying to win medals in the capital, one set of competitors will be out to clock the best times at the Lee Valley White Water Centre, Hertfordshire. That is the venue for the Canoe Slalom, which was first included as an Olympic event at Munich, in 1972.

It only became a permanent fixture from Barcelona 1992 onwards and, since then, Slovakia has cleaned up, with all seven of their Olympic gold medals coming in this event. The star of the white water rapids show for them is Michal Martikán, who has won more medals in the canoe than any other athlete, having achieved four to date.

As a teenager in 1995, he became the youngest person to win a World Cup event, and subsequently went on to capture Slovakia’s first ever Olympic gold at Atlanta, the following year. Silvers followed in both 2000 and 2004, and, in Beijing, he went one better, in gaining a second gold medal.

There is not too much in the way of competition for Slovakia to worry about, but with the home advantage, it could be worth keeping an eye on David Florence of Great Britain in the Canoe Single event.

It would be a major, major shock if he were to post a faster time than Martikán, but with silver and bronze up for grabs, the incentive is very much there.
